Every weekend we're watching movies together...whether you're in Pennsylvania USA, or Sydney Australia. It's a throwback! Back to the days when you had the anticipation for waiting till the weekend to see the classic horror or science fiction film that was listed in the TV Guide. The plan is to watch a movie at 7:30PM on Saturday night in your own time zone. Or, if you can't Saturday night...anytime during the weekend. Then, we'll all get together and e-mail our thoughts on the film...a few paragraphs...or simply a sentence if you'd like. They after-viewing reviews appear on our Creepy Classics/Monster Bash News Page. See the latest thoughts posted by viewers ther now.

THIS LAST SATURDAY'S MOVIE:"FIRST MEN IN THE MOON" (1964) Classic H.G. Wells tale of traveling to the moon. What the explorers (along with female stowaway) find are weird looking ant-men and giant caterpillers! Great effects by Ray Harryhausen. Suggested by Dan Brenneis, Strongsville, OH.

The big killer caterpillars are pretty cool and in general once the film
gets to the Harryhausen elements it had the feel of one of those good old
Saturday afternoon movies, simple plot and lots of fun.

The beginning of
the film seems slow to me. I did enjoy the whole US-Russian joint mission
thing, that's very interesting given the time the movie was made. Once
again they've got a nice split level rocket with more room than the
international space station, plus the really cool space suits. I love the
method by which they lower the astronaut to the moon.

I didn't enjoy the part of the film where we get the back story to the original voyage to the
moon. It plays like a bad Disney rip-off. Lionel Jeffries is ultra goofy
and his bumbling assistants seem like they're ready to break out in song
and dance at any moment. In fact that's what was missing in my opinion. 
You knew, at least in those Disney films, that a great song by the Sherman
brothers was coming up any minute. But here, alas, no songs. Next time,
I'll keep my thumb on the skip ahead button and get to the good part
quicker.

Hey Bash Synchers,

After a long hiatus I am back. Couldn't pass up watching a Harryhausen flick with you guys.

Before my review, I want share my Monster Kid Memory of my second lifetime viewing of this film. Back in the day when every week we had a treasure hunt every Sunday as we went through the TV guide to find what monster movies would be on, I struck gold. Saturday night, First Men in the Moon was going to be on prime time. There was a problem though, my folks had tickets to the musical 1776. So before me was a dilemma. I had to go watch Benjamin Franklin sing while a Harryhausen movie was airing. What was I to do. My body took care of it for me. On the way to the play, I started feeling sick to my stomach. "Dad, I think I am going to throw up." Angrily, my dad left my mom at the play and took me home. "You go to bed..." Of course the moment I arrived home and my dad had left, the symptoms miraculously disappeared. I snuck downstairs and watched First Men in the Moon. Does anyone else have a similar story???

I have always had mixed emotions about this movie, similar to my feelings for 3 Worlds of Gulliver. They are both great looking movies, humorous and exciting, well written, great music, great acting and stories, but they are disappointing as Harryhausen movies. The space effects in this are cool, and there are a lot of effects, but the creatures...cool looking, but they just don't have much to do. There is a long prologue before we even see one. So in the end, I like the movie as a science fiction movie, but I feel let down because the creatures didn't do anything. The most active ones were kids in suits, can't compare with the stop motion beasties.

Of course for me the highlights are the moon calf and the cameo with Ray's skeleton. Cool stuff, but too little when you compare to the effects scenes in Jason and the Sinbad movies. I think if I didn't see it as a Harryhausen movie, I would enjoy it more, it is a good movie, a slow start, but enough humor to maintain interest, and combines the humor with thrills and adventure and good science fiction.
